Postdoctoral Researcher - Molecular genetics of sperm-female interactions: Syracuse, NY, United States

The Dorus and Pitnick Labs are seeking motivated individuals with a strong background in proteomics, genomics or molecular genetics to study the mechanistic basis of sperm-female interactions. The main goal of the research is to characterize the molecular modifications that sperm undergo as they traverse the female reproductive tract. Although some of these changes may be critical to sperm function and fertility, a detailed characterization of this molecular transformation has yet to be conducted.  Quantitative proteomics will be used to identify modifications that occur during sperm storage in the fruit fly and molecular genetic techniques will be employed to investigate the role of these modifications in sperm maturation and function.  The relationship of specific modifications and mechanism of sperm-female interaction to analogous processes in mammals will be of particular interest for further exploration.

The start date and the duration of the position are negotiable.

Responsibilities:

The applicant is expected to lead multiple research projects, work closely with Dr. Dorus, Dr. Pitnick and collaborators at Cornell University, perform data analysis, present/publish the results in scientific conferences/journals. The applicant will have a great deal of independence in developing the research project and will be encouraged to gain experience and develop skillsets relevant to their career development.

Qualifications:

• PhD in genomics/genetics/cell biology/reproduction
• Experience with tandem mass spectrometry and/or high-put sequencing data analysis
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Experience in Unix/Linux and preferably at least one additional programming language
• Experience in one or more of the following fields preferred, but not required: reproductive biology, Drosophila genetics, evolutionary biology, systems biology

The position is based in the Center for Reproductive Evolution at Syracuse University.  To learn more about research in the CRE, please visit http://cre.syr.edu
