PhD Student Structural Biology of DNA Replication M / F, Leiden: Leiden, Netherlands

We are looking for a PhD student to join the Lamers laboratory. Our research focuses on two closely related essential cellular processes: DNA replication and translesion DNA synthesis, with the aim to create a complete and detailed description of all the steps in these processes. Your task will be to study different protein-DNA complexes by single particle cryo electron microscopy, protein crystallography, or biochemical/biophysical methods.

Your profile

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated colleague who recently obtained a master's degree. You should have knowledge of biochemistry and structural biology and a drive to answer important and fundamental biomedical questions. A background in DNA replication and/or DNA repair is helpful but not essential.

What we offer

You will be employed on the basis of a 36-hour week. Appointment should lead to a PhD thesis and is for a maximum duration of four years. Your salary will depend on your qualifications and experience, with a maximum of € 2,266 gross per month in the first year ascending to € 2,903 in the fourth year (scale PhD, CLA UMC). By joining us, you will be part of a young and dynamic team consisting of international researchers.

The organisation

The LUMC is a center for medical innovation that aims to improve patient care through leading international research. So as to also provide our patients with a safe and friendly environment, we need doctors, medical care specialists, support staff and academic researchers. Our research fits seamlessly into and communicates with other research that takes part at different departments of the LUMC. The Lamers group is also part of a pan-European consortium, in which different research groups study DNA mismatch repair and transcription coupled repair (see http://www.dnarepairman.eu). Finally, the LUMC has the most advanced equipment for molecular biology research and cryo-EM studies and is closely associated with the Netherland Center for Cryo-Electron Nanospectroscopy (NeCEN) that is equipped with two Titan Krios microscopes.
