SCIENCE-JOBS-DE

PhD Student in Cardiovascular Research - 3 year fixed-term contract (up to 4 years), full time, starting early 2018

Luxembourg Institute of Health is a public research organisation at the forefront of biomedical sciences. With its strong research expertise in oncology, population health, infection and immunity based on human biological samples, its research activities impact on people’s health. At the Luxembourg Institute of Health, devoted scientists investigate disease mechanisms to develop new diagnostics, innovative therapies and effective tools to implement personalised medicine. The institution is the first supplier of public health information in Luxembourg, a strong cooperation partner in local and international projects and an attractive training place for ambitious early-stage researchers.

In the context of a FNR-funded CORE project, Dr Yvan Devaux (Head of Cardiovascular Research Unit) is looking to recruit a :

Project:

The project aims to identify novel RNA biomarkers that can be used to predict neurological outcome and survival after

cardiac arrest. Cardiac arrest is a main health issue affecting 400,000 persons per year in Europe and 400 in Luxembourg.

Despite modern health care strategies, half of patients successfully resuscitated from out of hospital cardiac arrest suffer severe and irreversible damage of the brain and die within few days. Even though the need for a personalized healthcare system is recognized, personalized medicine is still far from being widely implemented. In the context of cardiac arrest, the implementation of personalized healthcare is limited by a lack of specific prognostication strategies. The present

project aims to tackle this unmet clinical need and will focus on the discovery and validation of novel RNA biomarkers.

Past investigations from the Cardiovascular Research Unit allowed to identify microRNAs in cardiac arrest patients (PMIDs 22890253; 25886727; 27438111; 28819446; 29159560). Here, the aim is to extend these research activities to the longer arm of the non-coding RNA family, i.e. long non-coding RNAs and circular RNAs.

Methodologies will include deep RNA sequencing, quantitative PCR, molecular biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics and biostatistics. One national and two international multicenter cohorts of patients with cardiac arrest are available for the project.
