منیسک نقش مهمی در بیومکانیک و تریبولوژی مفصل زانو دارد. امروزه مشخص شده است که آسیب یا بیماری منیسک فرد را مستعد ابتلا به آرتروز می سازد. درمان آسیب منیسک از طریق عمل جراحی آرتروسکوپی به یکی از شایع ترین اعمال جراحی ارتوپدی تبدیل شده و درایالات متحده، 10 تا 20٪ روش های مربوط به زانو را دربرمی گیرد. .منیسک  توانایی ترمیم محدودی دارد که به اطراف عروق محدود می شود و در نتیجه، جراحی ترمیمی مناطق غیرعروقی همیشه امکان پذیر نیست. جایگزینی و ترمیم منیسک برای درمان جراحات با استفاده از استراتژی های مهندسی بافت در حال انجام است. این روش ممکن است امیدوارکننده باشد، اما موانع عمده ای برای غلبه به آن، قبل از ورود به بالین وجود دارد.

Abstract

The meniscus plays an important role in the biomechanics and tribology of the knee joint. Damage to or disease of the meniscus is now recognized to predispose to the development of osteoarthritis. Treatment of meniscal injury through arthroscopic surgery has become one of the most common orthopedic surgical procedures, and in the United States this can represent 10 to 20% of procedures related to the knee. The meniscus has a limited healing capacity constrained to the vascularized periphery and therefore, surgical repair of the avascular regions is not always feasible. Replacement and repair of the meniscus to treat injuries is being investigated using tissue engineering strategies.
