Starting Salary £29,448 pa (inclusive of London Allowance)
MRC National Institute for Medical Research, London
We are offering one 4-year Postdoctoral Fellowships, which are training and development positions for post-doctoral scientists, in NIMR’s Division of Mycobacterial Research. NIMR is one of the founding institutes of the new Francis Crick Institute. Opening in 2015 at St Pancras in central London, the Crick will have 1,250 researchers. Its goal will be to understand the basic biology underlying human health. It is supported by the Medical Research Council, Cancer Research UK, the Wellcome Trust, University College London, Imperial College London and King’s College London.
Applicants will have recently completed their doctoral studies, are moving into a new research discipline, have limited previous experience of key transferable skills, or are clinically qualified with little or no research experience. A CDF will provide opportunities to develop research project skills and collaborative links with colleagues within the Institute and elsewhere.
The post-holder will work on identifying and characterizing important orphan enzymes and unknown metabolic pathways from Mycobacterium tuberculosis, using metabolomic methods (Chem & Biol 2010 17(4): 323-32; PNAS 2013 110(28): 11320-5; Nat Chem Bio 2013 9(11): 674-6). The work will involve protein purification, mechanistic enzymology, metabolomics, and microbiology (with virulent M. tuberculosis).
High motivation, creativity and ability to work independently and as part of a diverse group are esential for this position. Previous experience in the study of bacterial metabolism employing either genetics or metabolomics, bacterial transporters and Mycobacterium tuberculosis would be an advantage. We are particularly looking for candidates with proven knowledge of microbiology, transporter biology, genetics and physiology, who wish to work on Mycobacterium tuberculosis nutrient acquisition.
