Postdoc position in molecular genetics (16540 Hohen Neuendorf b Berlin )
Within a project for the “Establishment of genomic selection in order to improve disease resistance, performance, behaviour, and genetic diversity in the honey bee (GeSeBi),” the Institute for Bee Research Hohen Neuendorf invites applications for a
• Postdoc(German salary scheme TV-L, E 13) position
Aims of the project
Honeybees are very important pollinators of both wild and crop plants. The main threat to honeybee colony survival is the Varroa mite. In addition, colony losses in honeybees are assumed to be associated with reduced genetic variability in selected populations. This project, financed by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, aims to:
- Develop a new high density SNP chip
- Estimate SNP marker effects for important breeding traits, especially disease resistance
- Identify and characterize genes influencing disease resistance
- Establish a unified approach which combines full pedigree and genomic information from
both genotyped and ungenotyped individuals
- Provide insight into the genetic diversity of the German honeybee population using WGS and SNP data.

Requirements
- An excellent degree in molecular genetics (or equivalent).
- A strong background in molecular genetics methodology, especially quantitative Real-Time- PCR, DNA-extraction, SNP-genotyping and sequencing.
- A solid understanding of statistical genetic methods and experience with application of these to real data like large NGS- and SNP-datasets.
- Knowledge of animal breeding concepts, especially genomic selection, is an advantage.
- Excellent communication skills in English (spoken and written).
- Cooperation with the two bioinformaticians involved in the project, other groups of the house and cooperation partners.
- A proactive, highly-motivated team player with good organisational skills.
Further information and application
Given the final approval of the project by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the position will be available for 3 years beginning on January 1st, 2015. The candidates will be part of a highly motivated team and find an attractive working environment (see ww2.hu-berlin/bienenkunde) situated in the suburbs of Berlin. Applications including the usual documents should be sent as a single pdf file to bienenkunde@hu-berlin.de until November 25th , 2014. For further details, please contact:
