PhD student position in Sensory Neuroscience (Tuebingen, Germany)
Applications are sought for a PhD student position on the topic of “Calcium dynamics in degenerating cone photoreceptors”.
Inherited neurodegenerative diseases affecting photoreceptors, the sensory neurons of the retina, are a major cause of blindness. The mechanisms at play are still largely unknown and, to date, there is no treatment available.
We are now looking for a PhD student interested in exploring the role of calcium signalling during cone photoreceptor degeneration using animal models for primary and secondary cone degeneration that express a FRET-based, genetically encoded calcium indicator in cone photoreceptors.
The techniques to be used include organotypic explant cultures,live-tissue imaging of light-evoked activity, in situ activity assays, standard fluorescence and two-photon microscopy.
The candidate will be working at the Werner Reichardt Centre for Integrative Neuroscience (CIN) and the Institute for Ophthalmic Research of the University of Tuebingen, Germany, under the joint supervision of F. Paquet-Durand and T. Euler.
Candidates should have a background in neuroscience; additional experiences in retinal biology, handling of experimental animals, cell and tissue cultures, and imaging techniques will be considered as assets.
The position is immediately available, with funding for up to 3 years. We offer employment with a salary and social benefits based on the collective agreement for public service employees in the academic and science sector, TV-L. The CIN promotes gender equality and therefore particularly encourages female scientists to apply. Preferential status will be given to handicapped persons, if equally qualified.
Applications should include a CV, a statement of research motivation and experience, and the names of at least two referees.
Please compile your application in one single PDF-file and email it to F. Paquet-Durand (francois.paquet-durand@klinikum.uni-tuebingen.de) or to T. Euler (positions@eulerlab.org). For further information, see positions.eulerlab.de, www.cin.uni-tuebingen.de and www.eye-tuebingen.de.
