PhD Student position in

PAIN RESEARCH / NEUROSCIENCE / PHARMACOLOGY

Department of Anesthesiology
Charité - Campus Benjamin Franklin
Freie Universität Berlin, Germany

Our group is interested in translational research on mechanisms of inflammatory and neuropathic pain and its control by opioids and neuro-immune interactions (see e.g. Nature Med 2003;8:1003-8; J Neurosci 2006;26:4350-8; J Clin Invest 2008;118:1065-73; PLoS Pathog 2009,e1000362; J Clin Invest 2009,119:278-86; Pharmacol Rev 2011;63:860-81; FASEB J 2012;26:5161-71; EMBO Mol Med 2013,5:1263-77; PAIN 2014;155:2056–62).

We are funded by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF), the European Commission and the Helmholtz Virtual Institute for Biomaterials in Medicine, and provide a stimulating environment through interactions with experimental and clinical groups at the Freie Universität Berlin, Charité, Max-Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics, Zuse Institute for Applied Mathematics, Deutsches Rheuma-Forschungszentrum, Leibniz Institute for Molecular Pharmacology and Max-Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine.

We are seeking candidates with interest in opioid receptor signaling pathways examined by e.g. radioligand binding, radioimmunoassay, and/or electrophysiology. The position is part of a multidisciplinary consortium funded by the BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research). All necessary equipment is available, including in vitro skin-nerve preparation, patch clamp, cell culture, calcium imaging, FRET, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, Western blotting, radioimmuno-/enzyme assays, binding, PCR, cloning, mutagenesis, FACS, MACS, in vivo microdialysis, in vivo testing of pain, sedation, respiratory depression, place preference conditioning,  and clinical measurement of pain in human patients.

Successful applicants will be highly motivated, career-focused individuals who are self starters, comfortable in carrying out research both individually and in a team, prepared to work on schedules requiring intermittent evenings, weekends and/or holidays as needed. Demonstrated proficiency in English language is required; proficiency in German language is desirable. Applications require a degree in biology, neuroscience, biochemistry, pharmacology, or related fields. The position is available for 4 years, beginning April 2015. Salary is according to 50 % E 13. We prefer personal interviews but cannot reimburse travel expenses for applicants. Please send CV and names of two references to:
