Postdoctoral Research Fellow: Toronto, Canada
This is a postdoctoral fellowship at the Princess Margaret Hospital/Ontario Cancer Institute, Toronto – Canada’s largest cancer research centre – and is supported by a recently-funded pancreatic cancer translational research initiative. The primary goals of the laboratory are to understand the biology of pancreatic cancer in the clinical context, and to use that information in the design of novel approaches to treatment. It makes extensive use of orthotopically-grown patient-derived xenografts, as well as pancreatic cancer samples obtained at surgery. The laboratory is fully integrated into a comprehensive program that includes extensive genomic characterization, basic discovery science, and the clinical management of more than 300 pancreatic cancer patients seen per year.
We recently identified hypoxia as a major adverse feature of pancreatic cancer, and a large effort is under way to understand the underlying mechanisms and consequences of tumour hypoxia, using primary xenografts, as well as surgical specimens from patients enrolled in a unique clinical trial using the hypoxia tracer pimonidazole. Additional laboratory interests include the investigation of epigenetic mechanisms as potential drug targets, and the application of sophisticated flow cytometry techniques to study the effects of chromosomal instability on sensitivity to agents that disrupt post-DNA replication checkpoints. In addition it has wide-ranging external collaborations that focus on the experimental treatment of pancreatic cancer, including antibody engineering and nanotechnology. This position is renewable on an annual basis for a maximum of 4 years at an initial salary in the range CDN$40,000, and is suitable for a recent PhD interested in a career track in translational research linked to cancer treatment.
