A newly established group in the Department of Medical Biotechnology at IBMT looks for highly motivated students who wish to graduate in a vibrant environment where state-of-the-art, application-oriented basic research is conducted.

Subject
Molecular Cell Biology

Project Supervisor
Dr. Luca Gentile

The PhD Committee
Your doctoral studies will be superintended by a panel of experts from both IBMT and Uni-Saarland. They will evaluate your progresses and provide you with constant support and supervision.

Position code
IBMT-2015-10

Project description
Permanent disabilities affect 10% of the world’s population. Pluripotent cells have the intrinsic ability to self-renew indefinitely, maintaining the ability to differentiate into any cell lineage. Our goal is to understand conserved mechanisms of pluripotency in order to exploit pluripotency-mediated regeneration for treating a variety of pathologies and conditions.

The project will be centered on the molecular characterization of the ground-state planarian stem cells, with focus on: 1) the commitment and the onset of differentiation 2) the control of pluripotency exerted by the niche.

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to experience research in the field of stem cells and pluripotency. The successful applicant will receive excellent training in basic in vivo research and benefit from both academic and industrial supervisors.

Your profile
Applicants should hold a Master, Diploma or an equivalent degree in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry or a related discipline. Excellent English communication skills (written and oral) are expected. Expertise in molecular and cell biology techniques are prerequisite, hands-on experience in ex vivo cell manipulation, cell transplantation and live cell tracing in the planarian model is advantageous. We expect enthusiasm, a strong motivation in driving forefront research and the capability to act as a team player.

Services, facilities and infrastructures
IBMT provides state-of-the-art services such as FACS sorting, advanced microscopy, automated cryobanking, an excellent scientific environment to conduct interdisciplinary research and the possibility to use the facilities of the University of Saarland. It is located in Sulzbach, 10 km away from Saarbrücken, in the idyllic region of Saarland.

Submission of the application
To apply, please send a cover letter with a short personal statement outlining your research and technical background, your CV, the copies of your degree transcripts and the contact details of two References untilFriday, May 15th, 2015, via e-mail to: sieglinde.schuck@ibmt.fraunhofer.de

Fraunhofer is Europe’s largest application-oriented research organization. Our research efforts are geared entirely to people’s needs: health, security, communication, energy and the environment. As a result, the work undertaken by our researchers and developers has a significant impact on people’s lives. We are creative. We shape technology. We design products. We improve methods and techniques. We open up new vistas.

Applications of disabled persons with the same professional and personal qualification will be treated preferentially. Please indicate a handicap in the cover letter and enclose the relevant certificate.

IBMT promotes equal opportunities. Applications of female candidates are expressly encouraged and will be treated preferably in case of equal qualifications and suitability.
