The Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) is the national clinical centre for ophthalmology in Singapore andan internationally recognized tertiary centre for eye care that manages an annual workload of 275,000 outpatient visits, 14,000 major eye surgeries and 13,000 laser procedures. It has staff strength of 670 including 90 full-time medical staff.

The Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI) serves as Singapore’s national research institute for ophthalmic and vision research. SERI functions as the research arm of the various clinical ophthalmic centres in Singapore, including SNEC. SERI/SNEC has developed a world-leading reputation in broad-based clinical translational research programmes for eye diseases.

Duke-NUS and SingHealth are partners in Academic Medicine – an important initiative to innovate clinical care, education and the development of new knowledge, with the ultimate aim of translating results into better healthcare and medical treatment for patients. Our Academic Medicine efforts are enhanced with the establishment of Academic Clinical Programs (ACPs). The Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences ACP (EYE ACP) is a cluster-wide framework for all ophthalmologists to advance in Academic Medicine with resources and funding support. To ensure the healthcare outcomes are world-class, the EYE ACP will focus on developing a comprehensive framework of existing well-established research capabilities in SERI and the training expertise in SNEC.

SNEC is inviting suitably qualified candidates for the position of clinical research fellow in medical retina.The position offers the opportunity to do research and clinical work at SERI/SNEC and the broader EYE ACP.

Job Purpose

You will undertake research in SERI and clinical work at SNEC related to a broad range of medical retina conditions (age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular diseases etc). You will assist Professor Tien Yin Wong, A/Prof Gemmy Cheung and A/Prof Cheng Ching-Yu in the successful execution of the project(s).

In this role, you will be part of the broader EYE ACP structure thataims to transform SNEC/SERI into a world-class academic centre, that that serves as the global lead in the eye research, education and patient care.

Structure and content

This post is designed to offer experience both in clinical medical retina and research opportunities. It is expected that the postholder will spend about 50% time in clinical work and 50% in research work

The Clinical Component will include participation in medical retina clinics, diabetic retinopathy clinics and laser clinics through which the post holder will be exposed to

•A broad variety of retinal and vitreous disorders with particular emphasis on macular diseases and retinal vascular disease. The principles, interpretation and hands-on experience with fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography and optical coherence tomography using state-of-the-art equipments.

•The principles, interpretation and hands-on experience in electrophysiology.

The post holder will be expected to be actively involved in education programmes of the medical retina department including:

•Fluorescein angiography teaching rounds, case presentations, clinical conferences, and journal clubs.

•Grand rounds and daily ward reviews.
•Participation in teaching of residents and/or medical students.

The Research Component will offer opportunities for the holder to participate in one of the clinical studies in SERI related to retinal diseases (age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular diseases) with support from SERI and supervision from Professor Tien Yin Wong, A/Prof Gemmy Cheung and A/Prof Cheng Ching-Yu and Collaborators. The post holder will also be encouraged to introduce new ideas and projects. The post holder will be expected to:

•To conduct and coordinate clinical research in medical retinal diseases within SERI/SNEC in line with its research strategy, including PI-initiated studies and industry sponsored clinical trials. •To assist in management of these research projects, which includes supervising post-doctoral research assistants, research students, technical and other support staff. •To publish research outcomes in appropriate journals of international standing and to publish and disseminate the result of research and scholarship in other reputable outlets. •To attend and present research findings and papers at academic and professional conferences, and to contribute to the external visibility of the department. •To help draft research reports for the Director and Principle Investigators. •To undertake such specific roles and management functions as may be reasonably required by the Director. •To attend meetings and to participate (where necessary) in other committees and working groups within SERI/SNEC •To ensure compliance with health and safety in all aspects of work.

guidance on the main aspects of the job. The postholder will be required to be flexible in their duties.

Duration: One year

Requirements
•MMed (Ophthalmology), FRCS or its equivalent and would have completed 2 years of advance training rotations in general ophthalmology.
•Must be experienced in most aspects of clinical ophthalmology.
•Research training with a Masters/PhD in epidemiology or in a related discipline, with of publications in international peer-reviewed journals
•A demonstrated familiarity with principles of clinical research studies
•Leadership qualities to work independently and to multi-task
•A good command of English
