PhD position in cell biology, posttranscriptional control of gene expression (Halle (Saale))

The institute of Molecular Medicine, Department of Pathobiochemistry, is looking for a highly motivated PhD student with a strong interest in the post-transcriptional control of gene expression and a background in cell biology. The position is funded by the DFG and is part of the GRK 1591 Training Program. We offer a structured 3-year doctoral program which provides a range of educational and research opportunities (see http://www.medizin.uni-halle.de//index.php?id=786 for further information).
This specific project will be focused on the characterization of post-transcriptional regulation of plakophilin expression by miRNAs and RNA binding proteins. Plakophilins are dual function proteins that are essential for intercellular adhesion via desmosomes but in addition play a role in growth control by regulating translation and proliferation rates. Thus, their expression and intracellular localization determine cell fate. This is important in the context of regeneration, wound healing and cancer (Hatzfeld M, et al. Cell Commun Adhes. 2014, Wolf A et al., J Cell Sci. 2013, Wolf A, Hatzfeld M. Cell Cycle. 2010, Wolf A et al. J Cell Biol. 2010).
Requirements: university degree (Master or equivalent) and relevant background in cell/molecular biology. Applications should contain a motivation letter, CV, publication list and a reference letter. Applications should be sent to: Prof. Mechthild Hatzfeld, Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg, Medizinische Fakultät, Institut für Molekulare Medizin, Sektion Pathobiochemie, Hollystraße 1, 06097 Halle or by email to mechthild.hatzfeld©medizin.uni-halle.de
