Research Scientist
Horizon Discovery is an award winning UK Biotechnology Company combining a long scientific heritage in translational research with a precision gene-editing platform based upon homologous recombination. The company is a trusted supplier of cell line generation services, genetically-defined cell-lines, reporter gene assay kits, assay development and compound screening services (RNAi, small molecule & biologics) to hundreds of organisations engaged in bio-pharmaceutical process optimization; drug discovery & development, and clinical diagnostic development.
Horizon is in a period of rapid growth, having recently raised significant funds through our AIM listing, acquiring a company in the United States, and the launch of multiple new product lines and service capabilities. We are therefore looking to recruit ambitious and dynamic individuals to join us on our journey.
Role
This position is suitable for histology professional, histology biomedical scientist or other laboratory scientist with extensive experience of optimising, trouble-shooting and running molecular histology assays. The Research Scientist will be involved with producing data for high priority studies. The primary responsibilities in the role will be:
- Preparing histological sections
- Optimising and validating robust immunohistochemistry (IHC) and in situ hybridisation (ISH) experiments on these sections
- Performing digital image analysis to quantify the outcome of the assays
- Designs and executes new methods and protocols related to area of expertise and / or proactively incorporates new technology or techniques into practice with minimal supervision.
- Executes a wide range of experiments / technical studies / tasks independently based on protocol.
- Identifies and troubleshoots problems in the execution of experimental processes / technical studies / tasks; interprets results and communicates to his / her supervisor and / or designs next logical step of experiments based on interpretation of results.
- Contributes to scientific papers and / or internal reports.
- Performs complex data management tasks with minimal supervision.
- Fully understands the rationale and hypotheses for experimental designs and / or has extensive theoretical understanding of a particular area of science.
Qualifications and experience:
- Biomedical Science degree / higher degree in Scientific Discipline.
- Has theoretical and practical scientific knowledge and expertise/experience typical of a Master’s Degree or equivalent academic, clinical or industrial experience.
- Certified histology technician – HCPC registered
- Experience in histopathology laboratory / lab histology / cellular pathology / immunohistochemistry / in-situ hybridisation
- Histology sectioning competence with outstanding attention to detail in preparing slides. Through knowledge of microtome equipment and maintenance.
- Ability to design, optimise, validate and interpret immunohistochemical assays
- Proven experience of designing histology based assays on multiple clinical sample types. Experience of developing assays within a regulated environment would be advantageous.
- Experience of using slide digital image analysis, particularly Definiens Tissue Studio, Aperio image analysis algorithms or similar software to quantify slide staining.
- Fully understands the rationale and hypotheses for experimental designs and/or has extensive theoretical understanding of a particular area of science.
- Computer literate
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills. Attention to detail, excellent communications both written and verbal
