SCIENCE-JOBS-DE
PhD Position (Wien)
A PhD position (30h/week for 3 years) is available at the Department of Pharmacognosy at the University of Vienna, to dissect the cooperativity between the AMP-activated kinase (AMPK) and the transcription factor nuclear factor E2 related factor 2 (Nrf2). AMPK and Nrf2 are well known to ensure cellular homeostasis and protection upon energy and oxidative/xenobiotic stress, respectively. Although both signaling pathways elicit partly overlapping cellular responses and are concomitantly activated by several small molecules including drugs and bioactive natural products, first indications for a direct crosstalk between the two proteins have only recently emerged. A comprehensive understanding of how cellular bioenergetics (via AMPK) affects Nrf2-mediated detoxification responses is still missing.
In the course of the offered project we want to examine in depth the impact of AMPK on the posttranslational modifications and favored interaction partners of Nrf2 and resulting functional consequences. The employed techniques comprise among others mass spectrometry, aseptic cultivation of cells, transfection methods, co-immunoprecipitation, site-directed mutagenesis, fluorescence microscopy and promoter binding studies. The position is embedded in a newly granted FWF project, executed in cooperation with the Mass Spectrometry Facility at the Institute of Molecular Pathology, Vienna, and provides an inspiring and constructive work atmosphere as well as access to modern state of the art equipment.
As optimal candidate you should be a highly motivated and proactive graduate in (bio)chemistry, molecular biology, pharmaceutical sciences or similar, as well as possess an analytical mind, team spirit and excellent English skills. Previous experience in project-relevant methods will be an asset but no requirement. Proficiency in German is desirable in case you wish to participate in the compensated departmental teaching activities.
If you are interested, please send your letter of motivation with a description of technical skills, CV, university certificates and relevant references in a single pdf file to application.pharma@univie.ac.at. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to drop an email at elke.heiss@univie.ac.at.
Application deadline is the 1st of August 2016.
