PhD students: Perth, Australia
The Epithelial Stem Cell Biology Laboratory conducts research into the molecular and cellular regulation of normal and cancerous epithelial tissues. Recently relocated from Melbourne to Curtin University within the School of Biomedical Sciences (Perth, Australia), this group is internationally recognised for its contributions to skin stem cell biology, epithelial wound repair and carcinogenesis. The research program encompasses: (i) the study of stem cells and their microenvironment applicable to stem-cell based tissue engineering for skin regeneration in burn victims; and (ii) the role of the tumour microenvironment in metastasis, applicable to understanding malignant cancer progression. The Epithelial Stem Cell Biology Group now has opportunities and scholarships available for suitably experienced and qualified candidates to work on PhD projects.
Specific project topics that are available include:
• the role of paracrine secreted proteins in human skin regeneration and ageing
• the role of interactions between the tumour microenvironment and ovarian cancer cells in promoting metastatic spread
The positions available fall within the new CHIRI Institute PhD program. This program offers a unique opportunity for students to participate in an international training scheme in biomedical sciences. Candidates in this program will receive specialised training in biomedical technologies. The scholarship is equivalent to APA rates (approx. $25,000 pa, top ups available for excellent candidates). Nomination for international scholarships are possible for suitable candidates.
