SCIENCE-JOBS-DE

Master thesis student (f/m) (Bonn)

The German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) investigates the causes of diseases of the nervous system and develops strategies for prevention, treatment and care. It is an institution within the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres with nine sites across Germany (Berlin, Bonn, Dresden, Göttingen, Magdeburg, Munich, Rostock/Greifswald, Tübingen and Witten). The DZNE cooperates closely with universities, their clinics and other research facilities.

The laboratory “Selective Vulnerability of Neurodegenerative Diseases” led by Dr. Walker Jackson would like to offer students the opportunity to perform their Master thesis in his research group.

Description: The laboratory of Selective Vulnerability of Neurodegenerative Diseases is focused on understanding why misfolded proteins tend to damage specific brain regions.  We primarily study genetic neurodegenerative diseases including, Huntington’s disease, fatal familial insomnia and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and how diminished sleep affects disease progression.  We have two projects suitable for a Masters thesis. The first is to genetically engineer mouse embryonic stem cells using the CRISPR/Cas9 system. The second is to study sleep in mice using electroencephalography.

Required qualification: The successful candidate for the first project will have experience with basic molecular biology techniques including PCR, plasmid engineering and mammalian cell culture. The successful candidate for the second project should have basic knowledge in neuroscience.

The residence at DZNE will not be remunerated. All rights and obligations are subject to an unremunerated stay.

Please indicate in a cover letter which project is preferred and send your full application documents in one PDF document via e-mail to: application@dzne.de.
