SCIENCE-JOBS-DE

PhD Center for Molecular Medicine Cologne (Koeln)

The University of Cologne offers a wide range of scientific disciplines and internationally leading profile areas organized in six faculties. At the Faculty of Medicine 1.800 scientists are engaged in research, ranging from basic sciences to clinical application, as well as teaching and health care. Together with the University Hospital Cologne the faculty maintains 58 clinics, research institutes and centres. 3.400 students study in this dynamic and innovative environment. The Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital Cologne are embedded in the scientifically highly active Rhine region. They have strong contacts to and alliances with the surrounding universities and non-university research institutions guaranteeing scientific excellence in research and teaching.

The Center for Molecular Medicine Cologne (CMMC) and University of Cologne is seeking applications for a part-time (65%)

PhD position (m/f)

The position starts 1st November 2016 and is initially funded for 1 year (but with option of extension)

Summary:
Development and maintenance of mammalian tissues rely on proper function of essential signalling pathways, including canonical Hedgehog signalling activity. Defective Hedgehog signalling results in a variety of disease, including cancer. The overall goal of the proposed project is to address important scientific questions dealing with the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms of Hedgehog-Gli signalling activity during morphogenesis of mammalian skin and in the process of epidermal cancer formation. Given our strong research background in stem cell biology, the project will also investigate the potential role of the Hedgehog pathway controlling stem cell function in the skin.

Job description:
The project is part of joint efforts within the Collaborative Research Center CRC 829
(www.sfb829.uni-koeln.de) assessing mechanisms regulating skin homeostasis. Our group is embedded in a stimulating, multidisciplinary research environment at the Center of Molecular Medicine Cologne (CMMC) and the Center for Biochemistry at the University Hospital campus in Cologne. The laboratory employs a wide array of experimental techniques including cell biology, molecular biology, protein biochemistry, mouse genetics, cell transplantation and the institute provides state-of-the-art equipment and service platforms (www.zmmk.uni-koeln.de).

Successful candidates are expected to be highly motivated graduates with a diploma/master’s degree in life sciences. Applicants should have a solid background in molecular biology and experiences with cell biology, mouse experimentation techniques or biochemistry. Candidates should have a strong ability for problem solving through analytical thinking and enthusiasm for scientific research. We expect the ability for teamwork and good communication skills.

Your salary will be based on TV-L EG13 (65%).

Applications from female candidates are welcome; suitably qualified women will be given preferential consideration unless other applicants clearly demonstrate superior qualifications.

We also welcome applications from disabled candidates, who will also be given preferential consideration over other applicants with comparable qualifications.
