SCIENCE-JOBS-DE

Postdoctoral Researcher (Hamburg)

The research group ‘Synaptic wiring and information processing’ (Head: Dr. J. Simon Wiegert) at the Center for Molecular Neurobiology Hamburg (ZMNH) invites applications for a position as
Postdoctoral Researcher (100% German TV-KAH scale 13)

The position is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) and initially available for 3 years, with the possibility of extension. The research group is a young team of international scientists. We are interested in questions regarding the role of synapses for information processing and memory storage in the mammalian brain. We combine state-of-the-art imaging techniques with optogenetic manipulation of identified synapses in hippocampal slice preparations and in vivo.

Job description: The successful applicant will work within the ERC funded project “LIFE synapses - Long-term Investigation of Functional Excitatory Synapses: Linking Plasticity, Network Wiring and Memory Storage”. The central aim of the project is to identify synapses participating in memory processes and to study their morphological stability and pre- and postsynaptic functional properties in vivo. The candidate will use mouse behavior, two-photon imaging, novel optogenetic approaches and molecular markers to investigate functional synapses in their native circuit over the time scale of weeks.

Your profile: We are looking for highly motivated applicants who hold a PhD in natural sciences. The project is focused on behavioral experiments combined with various optogenetic approaches and sophisticated, chronic 2-photon in vivo imaging in the mouse brain. Experience with mouse in vivo experiments and one of the above mentioned techniques is required. To efficiently handle the high end imaging techniques and complex data analysis a certain background in physics, biophysics and/or programming is advantageous.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to efficiently integrate in a multidisciplinary research team are expected.
