2 PhD Positions in Theoretical Cell Biology : Duesseldorf, Germany

We are the Institute for Computational Cell Biology at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, using mathematics and computations to study evolutionary system biology and investigate how evolutionary constraints govern the adaptation of cellular networks. We provide an open and dynamic research environment to support the development of our members. We aim to recruit two highly qualified, self-motivated PhD students with a background in physics (or a relevant quantitative science / engineering subject), who are eager to join us in our quest to advance the theoretical understanding of biology.

One of our main interests is to understand the emergence of constraints in bacterial evolution, with approaches from the angles of genomics and metabolism. One PhD candidate will study how the structure of bacterial genomes constrains the exchange of genetic material between different bacteria, which acts as a barrier to adaptation. The second PhD candidate will study how bacteria optimize their cellular output under physico-chemical constraints.

Applicants must be proficient in English; knowledge in German is not required. To apply, please provide a CV, a cover letter, copies of relevant certificates (university degrees / academic awards / English proficiency tests, translation required if not in German or English), and the contact details of 2-3 referees. The position will remain open until it is filled.

Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf is a vibrant academic institution in the heart of West Germany, with particular emphasis on the life sciences. Our university aims at increasing the percentage of employed women. Female applicants will therefore be given preference in cases of equal aptitude, ability and professional achievements unless there are exceptional reasons for choosing another applicant. Applications from suitably qualified severely disabled persons or disabled persons regarded as being of equal status according to Book IX of the German social Code (SGB – Soziales Gesetzbuch) are encouraged….
