Postdoctoral Position in Genetics and Epigenetics: Chicago, IL, United States

A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Gemma Carvill at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in the Departments of Neurology and Pharmacology.

The primary goal of our research is to use gene discovery and molecular biology approaches to identify new treatments for epilepsy. We aim to 1) identify the genetic causes of epilepsy 2) use stem cell models to understand how genetic mutations can cause epilepsy, with a focus on epigenetic mechanisms and 3) develop and test new therapeutics for this condition.

Our work is based on the promise of precision medicine where knowledge of an individual’s genetic makeup shapes a personalized approach to care and management of epilepsy.

Examples of current projects include

• Epigenetic alterations in patient-derived or genome edited neuronal models of genetic epilepsies
• Sequencing of coding and noncoding regions in patients with epilepsy
• The use of alternative exons during neuronal development and their role in epilepsy

We are looking for enthusiastic and talented postdocs to join our new team. Applicants must have a PhD or MD/PhD, have graduated within the last year, or anticipate graduating within the next six months. A strong record of peer reviewed publications is essential, including first authorship. Candidates must have expertise in molecular biology and skills in at least one of these areas:

• Stem cell maintenance, neuronal differentiation and genome editing
• Epigenetic/omic techniques.
• Next generation sequencing including WES/WGS, computational biology, programming and bioinformatics
