PhD Position (m/f): Göttingen, Germany

The Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization at Göttingen, Germany, is an international research institute. It performs both experimental and theoretical fundamental scientific research and currently employs about 280 people.

For the independent research group of Dr. Karen Aim we seek to fill a
PhD position (m/f)
in Theoretical Biological Physics.

We are looking for excellent, highly motivated early-career researchers to join our research team.
How does form and pattern arise in a living organism? Plants are the ideal model system to investigate the interplay of hormones and mechanical forces during growth. In plants a single hormone called auxin forms a variety of different patterns ranging from spots, to streams to fountain-like structures. As part of the newly established research unit 2581 on “Morphodynamics of Plants” we want to investigate how auxin and cell mechanics together give rise to the highly dynamic patterns in roots. To tackle this project you will have access to the tissue simulation developed in our group and to experimental data of growing roots from our collaborators.

The PhD position is limited to three years. Starting date is September 1, 2017.

The PhD candidate should have a Master’s degree (or comparable) in physics, applied mathematics, or in a related field. The ideal candidate should have a background in quantitative biology, soft matter or statistical physics. Programming skills are highly desired.

In close collaboration with the Georg August University, a structured PhD program is offered in the graduate program of the Physics Department, or in the graduate program on the Physics of Biological and Complex Systems.

The PhD position is limited to three years. The salary and working hours are in accordance with the funding guidelines of the Max Planck Society for junior scientists, salary is 2/3 of E13 TVöD-Bund.
