Ph.D. Position in Molecular Neurobiology, University of Copenhagen, Denmark (Copenhagen, Denmark)
PhD scholarship in Molecular Neurobiology
A 3-year Ph.D. position to be filled as soon as possible is available at the Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen, to work on the molecular neurobiology of the placozoan Trichoplax adhaerens. T. adhaerens is the only known representative of a very old and primitive animal phylum, the Placozoa. Nothing is known about the nervous system of T. adhaerens, although from analyzing its genome, it is clear that this primitive animal produces neuropeptides, meaning that neurons must be present. To investigate the existence of this unknown nervous system will be the topic of this Ph.D. project.
The techniques to be used are: Bioinformatics, genomics, molecular cloning techniques, mammalian cell culture, transfection of cell lines in cell culture, cell-based bioassays of GPCRs, in situ hybridization, whole mount immunocytochemistry, and bio-imaging. We are looking for a young ambitious researcher with a finished M.Sc. study in biology, molecular medicine, or biochemistry and with a strong interest in molecular neurobiology and the evolution of the nervous system. Previous experience with one or more of the above-mentioned techniques, including molecular biology and cell culture, is an asset for this position, as well as high university marks.
