SCIENCE-JOBS-DE

TUMOR BIOLOGY AND IMMUNOLOGY

SMART PEOPLE WANTED!
The research project ZIK plasmatis (group: plasma redox-effects) at the Leibniz Institute for Plasma Science and Technology (INP Greifswald) focuses on the usage of physical plasma technology in cancer therapy. Emphasize is given to redox and immunological processes within the framework of immunogenic cell death. Cell cultures, animals models and patient samples guide the project’s understanding towards a better understanding of oxidative inter-ventions in (immune) oncology.

The INP Greifswald is the largest European low temperature plasma research institute outside of academia and ranks amongst the most modern institutions in this field worldwide. We carry out fundamental and applied research FROM IDEA TO PROTOTYPE. In an international environment, we are dealing with topics that are relevant to society within the research areas Materials & Energy as well as Environment & Health. Currently about 170 employees are working at three locations in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

For our group plasma redox-effects, we are seeking to hire for the location in Greifswald from 1st October 2017 a proactive and highly motivated

PhD STUDENT TUMOR BIOLOGY AND IMMUNOLOGY

The 66%-position is initially granted for 3 years / TV-L Ost wage group 13.

Job description:
The topic of your PhD will focus on the applicability of cold physical plasma for cancer treat-ment. Cold plasma expels reactive oxygen and nitrogen species which are known to be criti-cal in the redox biology of cancer and in the field of immunology. Specifically, the project will look into antigen presentation machinery in oxidatively stressed cells and the immunological consequences.

Within the scope of your doctoral thesis you will:
- evaluate how plasma acts on tumor cells and if therapy increases the immunogenicity of the same
- investigate in vitro as well as vivo models regarding a future role of plasma in cancer ther-apy
- elucidate the potential of combinational plasma-radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy
- supervise student internship projects as well as bachelor and master theses

Your profile:
- Master’s degree (or equivalent, e.g. German diploma) in human biology or similar
- Previous scientific focus on immunology or cancer research, preferably in conjunction with redox biology
- Preferably background in flow cytometry, microscopy, or other methods frequently used in cell biology and immunology
- Familiarity with animals models and FELASA B certificate is desirable
- Flexible, dedicated, detail-oriented
- Top teamwork competency but can also work highly independent
- Vivid inter-personal communication skills, significant self-motivation, excellent self-organization
- Technical savvy and comfort with computers, scientific software and technology-based life science research is essential.

We offer:
- Payment and social benefits according to the collective agreement for Federal States (TVL-Ost)
- Modern lab infrastructure and research tools, e.g. high resolution mass spectrometry, high content imaging as well as image and flow cytometry
- Internal trainings (e.g. project management, scientific writing)
- The possibility to take part at national and international conferences
- Interdisciplinary research – scientists from biology, pharmacy, chemistry, physics under one roof
- Flexible working hours
- A work environment certified as family-friendly

The INP promotes equal participation of men and women. Female applicants are especially encouraged to apply. Disabled applicants will be preferred in case of equal qualification.

The INP cannot reimburse application expenses.

Please send us your application including your CV, a list of publications and a description of your research interest and experience - preferably by using our online application form - by indicating the reference number “0218 – Ph.D. Tumor biology and immunology” until 23rd July 2017. Address inquiries to the INP Greifswald, Human Resources Department, Mrs. Gabriele Lembke, Felix-Hausdorff-Str. 2, 17489 Greifswald, Germany, email: bewu@inp-greifswald.de.
