The degrees offered by the Faculty are the Bachelor and Master of Science in Pharmacy. The postgraduate degrees are the Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmacy and the Doctor of Philosophy. The Faculty also provides professional postgraduate education in community and hospital pharmacy as well as in industrial pharmacy and plays an active part in the continuing education in the field. Assistant Professor / Associate Professor in Molecular Pharmacology
Tenure track system consists of two stages, each 3–5 years. The successful applicant may be appointed to the first stage (assistant professorship) or the second stage (associate professorship) of the tenure track system, depending on his or her qualifications and career stage.
The position is a fixed-term tenure track position. If the assistant/associate professor is successful and fulfils the predetermined criteria, the contract will be continued. An assistant/associate professor shall carry out and supervise scientific work, provide teaching based on it, follow developments in science and participate in societal interaction and international cooperation in the field.
The field of the position is molecular pharmacology and the position will be associated with the Division of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy. In addition to scientific research the assistant/associate professor is responsible for graduate level (bachelor and master in pharmacy) and postgraduate level training. The teaching has its main focus on molecular mechanisms of pharmacology including those underlying therapeutic drug actions and adverse drug reactions.
Qualification Requirements and Assessing the Qualifications
An appointee to the position of an assistant/associate professor within the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, successful applicants for assistant professorships shall demonstrate their capability and motivation as regards an academic career through publications and other means. The successful candidate is expected to have experience in teaching pharmacology at the university level, have experience in leading a research group and indication of obtaining research funding independently.
According to the regulations of the University of Helsinki, when assessing the applicant’s qualifications, attention will be paid to both scholarly and teaching qualifications. Scholarly qualifications include scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience as well as international elected positions. When considering the teaching qualifications, attention will be focused on teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as participation in doctoral education. The applicant’s leadership and interaction skills as well as activity in the scientific community will also be taken into account.
Based on the Government Decree on Universities the appointee for the teaching and research position must be competent in Finnish and have at least satisfactory oral and written skills in Swedish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish, (s)he is required to acquire a moderate level of proficiency in Finnish within five years of taking up the position. The faculty will support learning the language. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must also have good English skills.
Salary
The salary for the position is based on level 7 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of the Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal performance will be paid. Monthly gross salary will be about 4 400–5 400 euros, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.
