SCIENCE-JOBS-DE

Ph.D. position (m/f) (background in neuroscience / biophysics / engineering) (Bonn, Deutschland)

Caesar is a Neuroscience research institute associated with the Max Planck Society and is located in Bonn, Germany. Caesars research is interdisciplinary with scientists from various research areas working together on the topics of cellular signal processing and the neural foundations of behavior. This ranges from studying the behavior of single-cell organisms to studying one of the key questions of neuroscience: how does neuronal activity give rise to complex and goal-directed behavior?

The Emmy Noether Research Group Neurobiology of Flight Control led by Dr. B. Schnell is offering

Ph.D. position (m/f)
(background in neuroscience / biophysics / engineering)

The position is available immediately.

Project (Neural mechanisms of flight control in Drosophila):
Our group is interested in the neural circuits and computations that underlie the control of steering maneuvers during flight in the fruit fly Drosophila. We employ whole-cell patch-clamp recordings from behaving animals, behavioral assays as well as genetic and anatomical techniques to analyze the role of identified neurons in behavior.
The PhD student will focus on neurons that process visual motion stimuli to guide turning responses during flight, the computations they perform and the synaptic mechanisms underlying these computations. This project will mainly combine genetic manipulations and optogenetic stimulation with behavioral analyses, but also offers the opportunity to learn how to perform electrophysiological recordings from behaving flies.

Requirements:
- M.Sc. in Neurosciences or related field
- Proficiency in programming language (Matlab, Python) or willingness to learn one
- Good command of the English language
- Experience with Drosophila or electrophysiology is a plus, but not required
- Strong interest in neural circuits and behavior
- Ability to work independently

What we offer:
We offer a fixed-term contract for 3 years including social benefits. You will work in a young and dynamic environment, embedded in the scientific community of the Max Planck Society and the universities of Bonn and Cologne. Caesar hosts the International Max Planck Research School for Brain & Behavior and is involved in the Bonn International Graduate School of Neuroscience. The working language is English.

Caesar is committed to diversity and inclusion and is aiming to increase the percentage of women in areas where they are under-represented. We therefore explicitly encourage women to apply. Handicapped persons with comparable qualifications receive preferential status.

How to apply:
Qualified candidates all over the world are invited to submit their application (including a detailed CV and motivation letter) at our job portal: https://www.caesar.de/en/joining-caesar/
Closing date for applications: November 20, 2017.

For informal enquiries please contact Dr. Bettina Schnell by phone: +49(0)228 / 9656-198.

Caesar is certified by audit berufundfamilie.
