The Institute for Clinical Chemistry at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf offers a PhD position in Vascular Biology.
Our research aims to characterize the role of Neutrophil Extracellular Traps (NETs) in thrombosis. NETs are composed of extracellular DNA fibers and liberated from neutrophil granulocytes during inflammation. We have shown recently that NETs contribute to thrombosis in animals and biomarkers of NETs are associated with cardiovascular diseases in patients. Mechanistically, NETs appear to serve as an adhesive scaffold for blood cells and clotting factors, as well as triggering activation of platelets and coagulation. However, the molecular mechanisms are not fully understood (reviewed in Fuchs et al. ATVB 32 (8), 1777, 2012). To characterize the role of NETs in thrombosis, the successful candidate will be using in vitro assays and murine models combined with state-of-the-art molecular biology methods, imaging devices and high-throughput technology.
In summation, we are looking for an outstanding and highly motivated candidate with the following qualifications:
- MSc or diploma in biology, biochemistry, immunology or a related field
- Strong academic record and knowledge in molecular biology, cell biology and immunology
- Strong interest in inflammation, innate immunity and vascular biology
- Experience in basic science research and/or translational medicine
- Experience in cell culture, microscopy and murine disease models is a plus
- Proficiency in English is a must
Research will be conducted in the laboratories of the Institute for Clinical Chemistry located in the new research building of the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, which provides an outstanding infrastructure with a wide range of core facilities.
The successful candidate will enroll in the PhD program at the Medical Faculty of Hamburg University, which offers an excellent educational framework for students with basic science and medical background. For further information visit: http://www.phd-medical-faculty-hamburg.de
