hD position (3-4 years) available at the Institute of Cell Biology, University of Bern, Switzerland
PhD Program in Cellular and Biomedical Sciences; http://www.gcb.unibe.ch/content/index_eng.html
PI: Torsten Ochsenreiter
Topic: mechanisms of mitochondrial DNA maintenance
Requirements: Masters in Biology/Biochemistry or equivalent.
Starting date: Jan-April 2014
The Ochsenreiter lab is interested in mitochondrial organelle biogenesis. We use a variety of approaches ranging from bioinformatics to biochemical/molecular biological, proteomics and imaging techniques to better understand the mechanisms controlling organelle biogenesis. One of the key steps here is the proper replication and segregation of the mitochondrial genome, which is also implicated in many human diseases. We have evidence that the basic mechanism might be conserved throughout evolution and are now interested in a detailed characterization of the involved proteins. We mainly use Trypanosoma brucei as our model system but will in future also test our hypothesis in other systems like yeast, C. elegans and mouse.
Interested applicants should have a background in molecular biology/biochemistry. Previous work in mitochondrial biogenesis in yeast or other model systems is an advantage. No previous experience with T. brucei necessary.
Applicants should send CV and motivation letter and the form provided on (http://www.izb.unibe.ch/content/groups/ochsenreiter/jobs/index_eng.html )
