Compromised fertility is the biggest threat to expansion of the Irish dairy sector and there is an urgent requirement to address the issue of postpartum uterine infection. This project is a collaboration between UCD(www.ucd.ie), the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (www.nibrt.ie) and the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation (ICBF), and aims to target subfertility by validating early diagnostic markers of uterine disease in postpartum cows. The science of complex sugar molecules (known as glycans) and their role in human and animal disease mechanisms is currently a fast growing field. The focus of this project will be the discovery and characterisation of glycobiomarkers in animal health and their exploitation for diagnostic and prognostic use. You will be working in one of the world's leading glycoscience and reproductive biology groups and have the opportunity to use and contribute to the development of cutting-edge technologies such as high-throughput assays, liquid handling robotics and ultra-sensitive bioanalytical platforms as well as developing clinical skills.
You will work alongside experienced glycoscientists and reproductive biologists who develop new tools and technologies for biomarker discovery in clinical and veterinary research.
Requirements:
You will be a highly motivated individual with a good primary science degree (at least 2.1) in biochemistry, chemistry, biology, immunology, animal science, veterinary medicine or any other relevant biological science. An MSc in an appropriate discipline is desirable and experience in cattle handling and/or assay development and/or statistical data analysis would be beneficial. The successful candidate should be open to a multi-disciplinary project with some industry interaction.
