Two postdoctoral study scholarships in skin stem cell and cancer biology : Stockholm, Sweden

Karolinska Institutet, Dept. of Biosciences and Nutrition
The Department of Biosciences and Nutrition performs research and education in areas of medical science including molecular endocrinology, cancer biology, functional genomics, systems biology, epigenetics, structural biochemistry, cellular virology, and nutrition. The department offers an international study and working environment, including around 300 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel.

Area of research / Research group

The research group of Dr. Maria Kasper at the Dept. of Biosciences and Nutrition is investigating the dynamics of stem cells in skin – during normal physiology, wound healing and cancer initiation – using the murine skin as a model system (see lab references: Jaks et al., Nat Genet 40:1291-9, 2008; Snippert et al., Science 327:1385-9, 2010; Kasper et al., PNAS 108:4099-104, 2011; Kasper et al., JCI 122:455-63, 2012). To investigate the dynamics of stem cells and their progeny in these processes we use a wide range of methods like genetically engineered mouse models, cell sorting, in-situ sequencing, confocal single/two-photon microscopy and high-throughput transcriptomics.
We are a young, dynamic and very enthusiastic research team with a well-established high-profile collaborative network. The group is very well funded and located within an environment hosting a broad repertoire of state of the art equipment and technology including an imaging core facility (confocal, two-photon, super-resolution), a high- troughput center (sequencers, liquid handling, automation) and a transgenic mouse core facility.

Qualifications of the applicant

We are seeking two highly motivated researchers with a good team spirit and deep curiosity for science. The ideal candidates should have a strong background in molecular biology, biomedicine or equivalent, with a keen interest in skin stem cell dynamics and/or cancer initiation and transcriptional networks.
Experience in working with mice, molecular biology techniques, confocal microscopy and RNA sequencing is a strong plus; and good ability to communicate in English (written and verbal) is required. A proven track record that demonstrates high-quality research leading to publication(s) in international journals is also a merit.

Entry requirements

Scholarships to pursue postdoctoral studies may be awarded to individuals who come from other countries with the intention of remaining in Sweden only while obtaining all or part of their education. The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish PhD or higher. Having received a salary or other remuneration from Karolinska Institutet during the past two years may be disqualifying.
One requirement for receiving a scholarship for postdoctoral studies is central registration as a postdoc.

Type of scholarship

Karolinska Institutet awards scholarships to pursue postdoctoral studies. This educational scholarship, which is paid for a maximum of two years within five years after the receipt of a PhD or the equivalent, is tax-exempt.
The amount is set for a maximum of six months at a time and is paid out on a monthly basis.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English:
•    Personal letter of motivation
•    Curriculum vitae (max 3 pages)
•    Complete list of publications
•    Summary of current work (1 page)
•    Contact details of three reference persons
•    Ph.D. degree certificate or a formal document from the dissertation-committee stating the date of dissertation
The application is to be submitted on the NetRecruiter system.
