Open call for PhD positions - Research Training Group 1949
(German Research Foundation):

„Immune Response in Infectious Diseases – Regulation between Innate and Adaptive Immunity“

The University of Duisburg-Essen, the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf and the Ruhr University Bochum welcome applications for 14 PhD positions for a three-year structured program in the varied fields of the Research Training Group „Immune Response in Infectious Diseases – Regulation between Innate and Adaptive Immunity“ (RTG 1949).
Start of the program will be 1 April 2014.

The Research Training Group focuses on the interaction between innate and adaptive immunity in infectious diseases. In the course of the newly established RTG excellent young academics from natural sciences or medicine will receive an outstanding education in the fields of Infectious Diseases and Immunity.

The following institutes are involved in the RTG:
Institute of Immunology (Essen,
Institute of Medical Microbiology (Düsseldorf, Essen),
Institute of Virology (Bochum, Düsseldorf, Essen),
Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Infectiology (Düsseldorf),
Department of Trauma Surgery (Essen).

The three-year structured program consists of lecture series, retreats, symposia, lab rotations, methods courses etc. (mandatory). In addition, participants will be offered the possibility to attend language courses and seminars on infectious diseases etc. Successful candidates will be awarded the PhD degree (Dr. rer. nat.). The program is taught in English.

Requirements:
excellent graduates in the fields of medical biology, biology, biochemistry, biotechnology (Master or equivalent),
proven interest in one or more of the above indicated research fields,
highly motivated and committed,
interested in participating actively in the program of the RTG,
disposed to work with laboratory animals,
very good written and spoken English skills.

The duration of the PhD position will be up to three years max. The salary is in accordance with the German public service salary scale (TV-L E 13, 65%).
