Novel Biomimetic Scaffolds for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (Dr Aram Saeed) : Norwich, United Kingdom
This is a three year funded studentship and applications are welcomed from EU applicants. An annual stipend of £13,726 is available to the successful candidate.
Applicants are invited for a funded PhD position to work on an exciting project. The project aims to develop novel artificial scaffolds with biomimetic properties, enable cellular expansion in three-dimensional space (3D) and delivery of cells to areas of damaged tissues in a non-invasive manner.
The focus of this project is in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, which is a fast growing area of research that seeks to repair or replace damaged tissues such as blood vessels, heart, muscle, nerves, bones and others either by stimulating the body's own repair mechanism or replace with grown ex vivo functional tissue. This process often involves the combination of cell therapy with engineered scaffolds. The scaffold provides crucial physical and chemical cues, thereby reproducing the tissue microenvironment with physiological and clinical significance. A number of parameters are considered important when designing the scaffold materials such as ability to form a three-dimensional (3D) structure, relevant surface topography, tuneable mechanical stiffness and others. Despite intensive research into preparation of scaffold materials, there are still pressing needs to develop innovative functional scaffolds to meet the challenges of new therapies.
