SCIENTIST POSITION FOR A COMPUTATIONAL BIOLOGIST / BIOINFORMATICIAN (Heidelberg, Germany)
The research group of Prof. Bernd Bukau at the Zentrum fĆ¼r Molekulare Biologie der UniversitƤt Heidelberg (ZMBH) has an immediate opening. We are looking for a highly motivated and talented computational biologist / bioinformatician to join our research group which uses RNA-sequencing and ribosome profiling to analyze transcriptional and translational regulation as well as co-translational protein maturation processes in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells (Oh et al, Cell. 2011 Dec 9;147(6):1295-308; Becker et al, Nature Protocols, 2013 Nov, 8(11): 2212-39).
The successful candidate must have proven experience with the programming language Python and preferentially other languages such as Pearl, C or Java. Further requirement is a solid background in statistical data analysis of large data sets using Matlab, R or similar. The applicant will be responsible for analyzing deep-sequencing data derived from ribosome profiling and selective ribosome profiling experiments (Oh et al. Cell 147, (2011); Becker et al. 8, (2013)). Particular focus will be on developing and using algorithms for correlating sequence and structural features of nascent polypeptides with ribosome interaction of nascent chain maturation factors. As member of an international team of highly motivated researchers, the person must be fluent in English, have strong communication skills and be capable to independently develop new algorithms for addressing state of the art questions in current research. A background in molecular biology is a strong plus.
The ZMBH is located on the Life Science Campus. It hosts 18 independent research groups and offers an excellent, international research environment. Further details on research of the ZMBH are summarized on our website (http://www.zmbh.uni-heidelberg.de). Moreover, the ZMBH is part of the DKFZ-ZMBH alliance, a strategic alliance between the German Cancer Research Institute and the ZMBH. Currently, more than 34 research groups collaborate in the alliance, providing a unique interdisciplinary research landscape.
The initial period of employment is two years, with renewal option. Salary will be according to TV-L guidelines.
Interested applicants should submit their application (cover letter, a detailed CV that includes a description of previous and current research contributions as well as a list of references with contact information) quoting the reference "Bioinformatician Ribosome Profiling" by e-mail to Professor Bernd Bukau (bukau@zmbh.uni-heidelberg.de) no later than January 31, 2014.
Please understand that we cannot return application documents that are sent to us by post. Among candidates of equal aptitude and qualifications, a person with disabilities will be given preference.
