PhD student position in retinal research : Tübingen, Germany
1 PhD Student Position in Retinal Research
The lab of Thomas Euler at the Werner Reichhardt Centre for Integrative Neuroscience (CIN) / Institute for Ophthalmic Research at the University of Tübingen seeks 1 PhD student. The position is available starting April 1st 2014 with funding for three years.
Research
Our research is aimed at unraveling the function and organization of retinal microcircuits towards a better understanding of the resulting computational rules in visual information processing. We are also interested in the development of these circuits, and how they are affected during retinal degeneration.
The PhD project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) focuses on dendritic integration of cone input by horizontal cells. Techniques used will include subcellular two-photon calcium/chloride imaging in mouse lines expressing genetically encoded biosensors (constitutive expression or following AAVtransduction), electrophysiology, confocal microscopy and 3D reconstruction of horizontal cell/cone connections.
Training
The CIN and the Institute for Ophthalmic Research at the University of Tübingen provide an attractive and interdisciplinary research and training environment for PhD students. As student at the Graduate Training Centre of Neuroscience the candidate will have the opportunity to complete extensive training in scientific, technical and soft skills. The PhD student will also be encouraged to present their work at international conferences.
Qualifications
We seek a highly motivated candidate with a strong interest in dendritic signal processing and state-of-the-art optical imaging techniques. Candidates should hold or expect to receive a Master’s degree in Biology, Physics or other Life Sciences, preferably with a focus on Neuroscience or closely related fields. Successful candidates have demonstrated experience in basic electrophysiology and/or calcium/chloride imaging techniques. Previous work with the zebrafish or mouse retina is advantageous. The ability to work both independently and as part of a team is essential.
Application
Applicants should send a letter of motivation detailing the interest in the proposed project, summary of master’s thesis, detailed CV, contact information of two references and copies of university certificates by email to Dr. Timm Schubert (timm.schubert@cin.uni-tuebingen.de). Applications will be accepted until the position has been filled.
The University of Tübingen promotes gender equality and in particularly encourages women to apply. Preference will be given to physically handicapped persons if they are equally qualified.
