PhD Studentship in Molecular Cardiovascular Medicine : Frankfurt/Main, Germany
Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD studentship available immediately at the Laboratory of Vascular Inflammation (PI: Priv.-Doz. Dr. Konstantinos Stellos), Institute of Cardiovascular Regeneration (Director: Prof. Stefanie Dimmeler) and Department of Cardiology (Director: Prof. Andreas Zeiher), Goethe-University Frankfurt, Frankfurt/Main, Germany.
Research areas of interest: Despite the current evidence-based guidelines on clinical practice of cardiovascular medicine, the clinical manifestations of atherosclerotic disease, that is, coronary artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, and ischemic stroke, remain the major causes of morbidity and mortality. Atherosclerosis is a chronic nonresolving multifactorial inflammatory disease. We investigate the role of RNA-binding proteins in posttranscriptional regulation of mRNAs and microRNAs and their effect on cardiovascular homeostasis and inflammation. With the help of deep sequencing, bioinformatics and molecular biology techniques, we identify regulatory networks that orchestrate an inflammatory response including neovascularization. Our goal is to characterize novel mechanistic pathways involved in acute/chronic inflammation-induced tissue injury/repair and identify novel therapeutic candidates that simultaneously target various genes and cell types. The importance of our bench findings is further investigated in cardiovascular disease models in transgenic mice as well as in clinical studies. The Laboratory is part of the new European Cardiovascular Science Center Frankfurt (ECSCF), which is fully equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. Selected PhD students get employed for 3 years with a contract (TV-G-U E13, 65%) that includes social benefits.
We seek highly motivated, curious, prospective candidates with hands-on lab experience to join our international team. Our multidisciplinary translational research is supported by local collaborative research networks that offer structured training programs for PhD students. Applicants must hold (or be close to obtain) a graduate university degree equivalent to a Master of Science (MSc) in any discipline of natural or life sciences or medicine. While the knowledge of German language is not required, excellent written and spoken English skills are expected.
Applications of women are specifically invited. In the case of equal qualifications, competence and specific achievements, women will be considered on preferential terms within the framework of the legal possibilities.
The Goethe-University Frankfurt is committed to give preference to handicapped candidates with equivalent qualifications.
