Doctoral (PhD) student position in molecular biology : Stockholm , Sweden

Division
At the division of metabolic diseases the Freyer/Wredenberg research group is looking for two enthusiastic PhD students to study mechanisms of mitochondrial and metabolic diseases. Mitochondria have a central role in a wide range of cellular activities, and their dysfunction has been shown to be associated with numerous inborn errors of metabolism, neuro-degeneration, as well as human ageing.
Our group uses the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, as a model system to investigate the molecular mechanisms of mitochondrial function. In close collaboration with the Centre for Inborn Errors of Metabolism (CMMS) at the Karolinska University Hospital, we are interested in understanding mitochondrial dysfunctions, including the development of suitable animal models.

Duties
The successful candidates will study a variety of metabolic defects, specifically with the aim to
understanding mitochondrial RNA processing defects and their involvement in mitochondrial gene expression and disease. Students will be trained in generating and handling mutant Drosophila melanogaster lines, as well as culturing and studying human primary cell lines. A wide range of detailed molecular biological techniques will be acquired, both in human cell lines as well as flies, allowing the candidate to gain a genuine knowledge in molecular biology, mitochondrial genetics, bioenergetics and RNA processing.

Entry requirements
The successful applicants are highly research-motivated with a background in medicine, biomedicine or cell and molecular biology. Applicants should be driven and possess excellent communicational skills with the ability to work both independently and in a team. Good knowledge of written and spoken English is a requirement. Experience from experimental work within the area of cell and molecular
biology should have been acquired, and although experience in working with Drosophila melanogaster is favourable, it is not necessary. Personal suitability is of great importance, when evaluating the applicants. To meet the general entry requirements for third-cycle studies, an applicant must have

1. taken a second-cycle qualification
2. completed course requirements for at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 secondcycle higher education credits, or
3. otherwise acquired essentially the same knowledge in or outside Sweden.
An applicant who met the general entry requirements for third-cycle studies before 1 July 2007 is regarded as having met the current requirements, though no longer than until the end of June 2015.

Furthermore, English proficiency is required, for details see http://www.ki.se/doctoral/admission
A selection will be made among qualified applicants on the basis of the ability to benefit from third-cycle studies. Karolinska Institutet uses the following bases of assessment:
- Documented subject knowledge of relevance to the area of research
- Analytical skill
- Other documented knowledge or experience that may be relevant to third-cycle studies in the subject
The qualifications of the applicants will be evaluated on an overall basis. A decision concerning the doctoral student position will be made after admission to third-cycle studies. For additional information about third-cycle studies at Karolinska Institutet, see http://www.ki.
se/doctoral.

Financing
One position is partly funded by the Karolinska Institute KID funding. Both positions are fully funded for the duration of the studies.
Application process An application must contain the following documents in Swedish or English:
• A personal letter and curriculum vitae
• A copy of a degree certificate and associated certificates
• A copy of a degree project and any previous publications
The application is to be submitted on the NetRecruiter system….
