Postdoc (f/m) in Personalized Medicine in Neurodegenerative Diseases : Bonn, Germany

The German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) is a center of excellence within the Helmholtz Association that performs translational research on neurodegenerative diseases. The center includes nine high-performing sites in Berlin, Bonn, Dresden, Göttingen, Magdeburg, Munich, Rostock/Greifswald, Tübingen, Berlin and Witten.

Description:
Population Research at the DZNE aims to investigate causes and biomarkers of neurodegenerative diseases. Within the Helmholtz Initiative on Personalized Medicine, “iMed”, we have a project on “Infections, inflammation and immune status as risk factors and biomarkers for neurodegeneration and declining neurocognitive function”. Aim of the project is to study the interplay between infectious disorders, inflammation and immunity in the development and progression of neurodegenerative diseases at the population level. The project is embedded within the cohort of the Rhineland Study, a prospective population based study that will include up to 30,000 people aged 30 years and over. Your research will focus on profiling participants of the Rhineland Study with respect to microbiomic, serologic, genomic and inflammation markers, and investigate how these markers and marker profiles relate to symptoms and early markers of brain degeneration as assessed through detailed cognitive testing and state-of-the art brain structural and functional MRI imaging.

Responsibilities include development and implementation of relevant study protocols, supervision and monitoring of data acquisition and processing, analysis of data and preparation of manuscripts for publication in international journals, initiation of new research projects, mentoring of graduate and PhD students.

Qualifications and experience:
Successful candidates hold an excellent PhD in immunology, biochemistry, cognitive neurosciences, medicine, epidemiology or related discipline and have a strong research background in epidemiology and/or biomarkers of neurodegenerative diseases. Working experience in large-scale epidemiological or clinical studies is highly desirable. Demonstrable interest in quantitative research, strong analytical skills, ability for independent and critical thinking, and excellent communication and writing skills in the English language are a prerequisite.

Creative, highly motivated and team-oriented candidates who dare to take initiative and enjoy working in a fast-growing, dynamic research environment in an internationally oriented biomedical institution are strongly encouraged to apply. We offer a scientific position with a long-term perspective and possibility to develop this research area.

For further information, please contact Prof Monique M. B. Breteler (rhinelandstudy@dzne.de).

Employment, payment and social benefits are determined by the Public Sector Collective Agreement (Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst). Job location is Bonn, Germany. The DZNE is an equal opportunity employer. The DZNE especially welcomes and encourages disabled individuals to apply.
