Postdoctoral Position for a Hepatic Cancer Biologist : Ann Arbor, MI, United States

The Cellular Engineering and Nano-Therapeutics Laboratory at the University of Michigan is seeking an outstanding, enthusiastic, and motivated cancer biologist to be part of a multi-disciplinary team focusing on the development of new therapies for treatment of solid tumors. This position is available for one year starting January 2014 and can be renewed for additional years based on research progress and the availability of funds.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a MD or Ph.D. in cancer biology, life sciences, cellular and molecular biology, pharmacology, biochemistry or other related fields. The sough candidate should have extensive experience in surgical procedures in small animals, establishing orthotopic tumor models in nude mice, PK/PD studies of investigational drugs, aseptic cell culture techniques, and standard biochemical assays (i.e. western blotting, qRT-PCR, IHC staining, etc.). We are particularly interested in candidates with prior experience with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) models. Candidate’s expertise should be documented in a number of high impact peer-reviewed research articles. The desired candidate should have excellent experience in preparation of IACUC protocols; solid knowledge of computers and experience with databases; excellent communication skills in English and ability to interact effectively with other postdoctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students in a fast-paced environment; excellent organization and time management skills; initiative and ability to plan, carry out, and troubleshoot complex studies with minimal supervision and at the highest standards. Attention to details and ability to work on multiple projects is expected. Preferred candidates will have a minimum of 3-4 years of relevant research experience, strong publication record, and supporting recommendation letters from previous employers/mentors.

Responsibilities: The focus of this position is to establish an orthotopic HCC model in nude mice using human cancer cells; design and carry out experimental protocols to investigate the distribution and therapeutic activity of novel therapeutic particles; develop and carry out experimental protocols for toxicity and survival studies; and coordinate the experimental logistics with multiple collaborators. The selected candidate is expected to analyze experimental data, identify conceptual, methodological, or technical problems, and adjust experimental protocols to ensure research progress towards the stated milestones. The selected candidate is also expected to gather, summarize, and report all results on regular bases, participate in biweekly group meetings, and communicate project progress.
