PhD Studentship in Cancer Stem Cell Biology : Cardiff, United Kingdom
A PhD studentship is available in the laboratory of Dr. Neil Rodrigues at Cardiff University to commence in October 2014. Dr. Rodrigues’s laboratory is focused on understanding the process by which normal stem cells become cancer stem cells in blood disorders, such as myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). Cancer stem cells, as central drivers of disease progression and therapy resistance, are key therapeutic targets to improve otherwise poor prognostic outcome in MDS and AML. By deriving appropriate experimental models mimicking the development of MDS and AML, the PhD student will thoroughly characterize cancer stem cells in these diseases using state of the art cellular and molecular biology techniques. With this mechanistic information the candidate will proceed to screen for small molecules that may be used to therapeutically target cancer stem cells.
The student will be based in Dr. Rodrigues laboratory at Cardiff University’s flagship European Cancer Stem Cell Research Institute (ECSCRI). More information on ECSCRI can be found at http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/research/cancer-stem-cell
Informal enquiries on eligibility and consideration for the studentship should be directed to Dr. Rodrigues at RodriguesN@cardiff.ac.uk
Please note this studentship application is only open to applicants from the UK or European Union.
