An open position for a PhD student in the University of Goettingen, Germany
One open position for a Ph.D. / doctoral student is available in the Center for Biochemistry and Molecular Cell Biology in Goettingen, Germany. The aim of the project is to study the functional roles and regulations of peptidases. The methods applied are diverse and include molecular and biochemical approaches as well as microscopy and work with human cell cultures. The position will be financed for three years by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG).
Peptidases (proteolytic enzymes) constitute 1-5% of the human genome. Apart from proteolysis, they function as irreversible post-translational modifiers by acting as sharp scissors, which remove defined parts of a protein/polypeptide resulting in altered termini of their targets (neo-termini). The exposure or removal of parts of a polypeptide chain can then lead to a variety of outcomes, including changes in stability, protein interactions, catalytic activity or even cellular localization of the processed target. A major interest in our lab is studying the biochemistry and cellular biology of Dipeptidyl peptidases (DPP). Members of this family have important roles in regulating the activity of peptide hormones, neuropeptides and the immune system. The aim of this PhD project is to characterize novel substrates and interaction partners of DPP9, which is the rate-limiting enzyme for cleavage of proline-containing peptides in the cytosol and is essential for neonatal survival.
We are looking for a motivated, hard working and talented applicant who is curious and open for new challenges. A good understanding and experience in biochemistry and cell culture is an advantage. The successful candidate will join a young and still growing independent group in a stimulating and dynamic working environment with highly interacting groups and excellent research facilities. The University of Goettingen is an equal opportunities employer and places particular emphasis on fostering career opportunities for female scientists.
If you are interested, please send your applications containing your curriculum vitae, certificates and a cover letter summarizing relevant work experience and motivation to rgeiss@gwdg.de. Alternatively applications can be send to Dr. Ruth Geiss-Friedlander, Center for Biochemistry and Molecular Cell Biology, Department of Molecular Biology, Georg-August University of Goettingen, Humboldtallee 23, 37073 Goettingen, Germany.
